Level of Difficulty

Maaleh Akravim

This trail for expert hikers begins with a relatively steep ascent along an ancient highway and continues on to a descent into an impressive creek bed full of life.

The Trail

Follow the blue trail down into the creek bed and then out of the creek bed. Follow that trail up the Roman Maaleh Akravim. This ascent is long, but will give you a view of the Tzin Valley, the Tzin Factories and the Arava. At the top of the hill, you’ll find an ancient Roman fort (the black trail leads to the fort). From the fort, follow the black trail down to the waterfall of Nachal Gov. This requires walking along a cliff. This hike is not recommended for those with a fear of heights. Follow the black trail to the waterfall and then head carefully down along the green trail to the bottom. As you climb down, you’ll need to use the handholds that have been attached to the rocks. You will eventually reach a narrow canyon. Approximately 755 m after the narrow canyon, you’ll find yourself back where you parked. Pay attention to the blue trail that leads from the creek bed to the parking area.

Getting There

From the Chetzbah Field School, head north for 4 km. Then, turn left toward Maaleh Akravim (opposite Moshav Eidan). Continue for 65 km until you reach a sign that says Roman Maaleh Akravim. Park by that sign.

Before you set off for your hike, make sure that you have enough water (at least 3 liters per person), a hat and comfortable shoes.

Do not attempt this hike on hot days.
